When Kale began, there was some free content, and some content behind the paywall for paying community members. The main ‘products or services’ for paying community members are paid prompts which you can respond to for rewards (the current prompt), some paid only writing, and a paid only Slack community. Starting today, all things published by the Kale publication will be free.
If you are a paying subscriber and would like to downgrade from your paid subscription to free, I understand completely (If you’d like help with this, you can email me and I can do it for you if that’s easiest). However, we are still going to keep the community paid prompts going, so paid subscribers supporting the publication will support our ability to continue to shell out paid prompts to community members. Here is the about page for Kale from about a year ago:
This is an experiment to gather people working in engineering, computing, biology, energy, and manufacturing. Kale publication is about the implementation of science, that’s technology. Apes applying science, that’s us, Homosapiens!
Each Monday there will be an edition of Kale, and on select Friday’s essays from members in the Kale community. After costs, Kale distributes subscriptions from the publication to reward community writing and add value for the comrades apart of Kale.
The vision remains the same, gather a community of people interested in the hard sciences and technology. The change is that all writing from the publication will be free. I’m really excited to be sharing all the writing out in the open now. I’m also really excited for everyone to be able to comment and share the writing to increase the back and forth discussion we are getting form the writing. One of my hopes for the progression of Kale is that we can continue to get community members writing for the publication; sharing their views and arguments on the things we talk shop about here. One avenue for this, like I’ve mentioned, is paid prompts where we post a short prompt alongside a reward for the winning essay. Another avenue we can pursue for group discussion are Substack threads (one of my favorite thread publications is Astral Codex Ten). Feel free to let me know in the comments or reach out about what you’d like to see for the future of Kale.
Since we began, here are some of the essays produced by Kale:
Lots of writing to come, thank you for all the support since we began writing here.
