some thoughts going into wwdc from 2023
apple has strategic incentive to sandbag and not rush into the next hot thing/ they’ve been releasing ai features for the last decade, but people are ready to hear their take on generative ai and how ai fits into the longer term plans for the ecosystems, particularly for developers. They’ve been positioning themselves across the board, especially in hardware, for this moment. privacy → the most personal data. custom hardware vertical integration → run models on device
developers have been upset with apple for their 30% take rate of sales through 3rd party apps distributed on their platform, will they use new ai infrastructure as a tool to make developers increasingly excited what apple delivers for them?
is apple going let other models into apple device eco system from 3rd party developers?
some thoughts after wwdc
Aggregator of different 3rd party models
Siri takes on higher confidence queries and cross app workflows, and when the danger line is reached, apple offers to offload the query to a 3rd party llm that has been integrated, such as open ai to begin.
Image gen is also limited. In apple state of the union, apple confirmed they’ll still be working to help developers run all sorts of models locally on their devices, but have drawn the line between what apple models are outputting and what 3rd party apps and models are generating.
Apple is being sued by everyone, now including the DOJ and the US. Positioning themselves as an aggregator of llms is strategically valuable in the context of regulation, and how they are positioning themselves as less anti-competitive than competitors such as google who is using 1 model to do it all (Gemini).
we learned a lot about apple’s impressive strategy and plans at wwdc 2024, but feels very early in a new paradigm for human computer interface.
“What is the new revolutionary user interface that actually causes a change in user behavior?”
“How do you make something that is so great that people actually leave the defaults?”
apple private cloud compute is shift in philosophy for apple in some ways. but it seems to be remarkable attempt at a state of the art architecture for a hybrid approach to leveraging on device models while also drawing on more powerful models in the cloud when needed. it attempts to give users the option to tap into both larger cloud models and 3rd party models without sharing your underlying data with apple or other parties.
